ASSISTANCE PROGRAM FOR OWNERS OF RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS
DAMAGED BY PYRITE

Pyrite is a mineral that can be found in the crushed stone that was used as fill under the concrete slabs of basements and garages of some homes. In the presence of moisture and oxygen, pyrite oxidizes and causes swelling of the backfill, which can cause heaving and cracking of the concrete slab and cause major damage.

In Quebec, the sector most affected by the damage caused by oxidation of pyrite is the South Shore of Montreal.

The Quebec government has established the Program for owners of residential buildings damaged by pyrite to financially assist the owners to make adjustments and counter the damage caused by the oxidation of pyrite.

The program is managed by the Société d'habitation du Québec (SHQ) and implemented by participating municipalities.

Visit the SHQ for details of the program and list of participating municipalities.

Also check with your municipality to see if it participates in the program and to determine eligibility.

Visit the City of Montreal for details and criteria of his specific program.
